Over the last few weeks one of the statement that took away peace from nearly all the major automobile manufacturing CEOs from Minister of State for Power and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal has now been altered by a written reply from Babul Supriyo, Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. He stated “There are, at present, no plans under consideration of the Department of Heavy Industry to make all vehicles in the country powered by electricity by 2030.”
Earlier Minister of State for Power and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal had stated“We are going to introduce electric vehicles in a very big way. We are going to make electric vehicles self- sufficient like UJALA. The idea is that by 2030, not a single petrol or diesel car should be sold in the country.”
Why is the Government keep shifting the stand?
The government has been into a state of performing deep down dive into possibilities to arrive over a common consensus. They are still doing the analysis of reducing the carbon footprint and yet to come up with a proposed strategy to execute . They may have the right intent however they are still to come up with their final analysis keeping intact the interests of Automobile Manufacturers working in India.
The current infrastructure plan to support a complete makeover from existing Diesel-Petrol operated vehicles to Electric still doesnt convince the critics and the Think Tanks in and around India. They are still contemplating on the possibility of solving the common two problems that Indian Government will surely strive to make this happen.
- Where will the Electricity supply to charge these electric vehicles be compensated as India still is struggling as a nation when it comes to power?
- Indian Automobile Manufacturing Industry needs Time to make a paradigm shift of such kind. How is the Government working over the losses that these companies would incur if they are not able to sell their cars in India?
Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Roland Folger had requested the government “not to rush with the all-EV push” and foreclose better technological options for future generations as the rest of the world is racing to run on hydrogen and not electricity.”
FAME India – How feasible is the plan?
FAME India Scheme (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles in India) for implementation with effect from 1st April 2015 was launched with the objective to support hybrid & electric vehicles, thereby reducing nearly 1 gigatonne of carbon dioxide emissions and help India c save up to $300 Bn (INR 20 Lakh Cr) in oil imports by 2030.
FAME India proposes to launch Electric Vehicles in India in three phases. The second and third phase incorporates a PAN India approach to launch EV (Electric Vehicles) including all states, provided the first launch stands successful.
The Phase 1 was launched in 2015 and will expire on March 31, 2018. In the current phase introduction of EV-based public transportation systems in 11 cities across the country is proposed. These include Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Indore, Kolkata, Jammu and Guwahati.
With the plan ending in March, 2018 it seems that the Government is still bringing in all forces together and shall be late to execute in the first 11 cities, as the charging stations and the ecosystem right from sellers to services to buyers, are yet to be perceived in common inferences.
